Eating But Still Starving

Surfing this morning was like being famished and having to eat tiny tacos at the rate of one every half hour. Sorely inadequate. And you surely not only wanted to but actually did try to steal everyone else's rations.

And where's that swell YOU said was coming or already making its appearance? Don't tell me we have yet another no-show or almost-ran.

Posted at 10:26 PM

After

Small and inconsistent. It's being influenced by the low tide right now, for sure, which means the swell is not hitting yet. What we're getting are just the precursors.

What Day Is It?

Up "incredibly" early for a dawn session. It's my only opportunity to go surfing because I'm working all day starting at 8:45. Yesterday got much better in the late afternoon. I hope it came up overnight.

No Title Is Still A Title

Just spoke to my friend, and he said it was fun this morning at first, about 1-3, with good conditions and that eventually the sets died. There was definitely something showing yesterday, and I'm hoping for decent stuff this afternoon.

Tomorrow I'm working with that same friend as a video production assistant on a job for an out-of-town television show. We'll be shooting at various locations. Same thing on Tuesday. It's a day gig that will probably require long hours, so if I want to surf on those days I'll have to go in the early morning and only for a brief session. I'm bummed because, as you know, I surf everyday for several hours and missing even once makes me feel like I'm really losing out -- especially if there's a swell, as there's supposed to be.

There's some new southern energy, seems like the forerunners of a groundswell. It's bigger than yesterday. More than simply tidal surge. Some inconsistent head-high sets. Weak and mushy form, though.

August Winding Down

Gonna be small today. I'm expecting sloppy, ankle-snapping mushburgers until, hopefully, a fresh south arrives Monday/Tuesday. Got a bunch of new team rider shots to edit and then post on the Sadoy site, so perhaps I'll work on that this weekend.

TGIF

I'm expecting it to be junk today in Town. Spoke to Nelson last night. He said he got some pretty good waves during this week's NW swell. He did V-land the other day, and scored good Haleiwa one evening at the start.

As for me...I dunno, I'm hoping there'll still be more southern energy coming. After all, we have until October. I'm feeling so lazy. Living minutes from the beach makes it difficult to get motivated to drive out to Country even though the waves are so much better out there. But I hereby resolve to be more committed than I was last season to surfing Country/Wesside this winter.

"Early"

Looking at JB's shots of yesterday, it seems Country was going off. It looks real fun. Well, at least much better than the crap we had in Town. Yesterday was a bummer for me because I had high expectations (but not unreasonably so).

My son is leaving today. This morning we're going for a last session together, and then I'll drive him to the airport. After that I'll go back in the afternoon for another go out before work.

I Want More

Yesterday was fun. It was inconsistent, but when they came in it was about as good as it gets at my usual spot. Juicy, solid, overhead bowls with long walls all the way across and in. And it was empty--barely anyone out. That is, initially. As the session progressed, it worsened and more people came out. Nonetheless, it was still rippable and I was catching a lot of waves.

Update: BTW, yesterday in the water my friend said he heard Country was junk--only V-land was good. This, of course, is pure hearsay (def.: hearsay. An out-of-court statement made by someone other than the witness currently testifying offered to prove the truth of the matter asserted.).

Back To School

Today marks the beginning of the new semester for many, and now all miscreants should be securely ensconced in their learning boxes this morning.

Yesterday was much bigger than the previous day. The difference was obvious. Is the source of the fresh pulse tropical storm Estelle? If so, why the westerly angle?

And what of today? I'm thinking there's going to be bigger stuff. And it won't be crowded. There are waves on all shores (Country, Wesside, east), so there are a lot of choices for everyone. Please don't go where I'm going, okay?

Up Early

Got some things to do this morning, so I'm up sooner than usual. Chores, errands, but no people to see--just stuff.

Reports this morning are saying it's small. Yesterday in the water, someone told me we're supposed to be getting a south bump today. Ha, ha.

Speaking of yesterday, it was okay when I first got out (definitely bigger than the previous day--seemed like some new energy), and then it just turned to crap. I was told that it was good earlier in the morning. And today was crowded. Why? The schools are back in session, and it was a Monday and everyone's working, etc., and I was really surprised so many people were out. Why don't they get an education or a job (preferably both)? Ha, ha.

My son had fun today. Probably the best day for him since the previous Wednesday. It wasn't consistent or good-sized, just that he had some nice, long rides. As we paddled in, he was smiling and said he was satisfied. That made me happy.

Monday, Monday

Reports are indicating there's still some stuff lingering. Yesterday was small and extremely weak. For my first session, I had to paddle down to an adjacent spot because the waves were just too gutless at my usual place. Then with my son for my second session, it was okay but kinda inconsistent and packed with beginners on longboards (it was dangerous--my son was almost taken out by a kook). I'm off from work today and will be able to relax and surf as long as I want--there'll be no need to rush around and stress about time.

Day Of Relaxation

Wasn't able to post again yesterday after my session. Been really rushing around (and stressed out) as I go from the beach to home to the beach and then to work.

It was slightly bigger than the previous day, at least for the initial part of the session. As the tide got higher, though, the sets became less frequent. And it was crowded.

Today is smaller? That's what "they" are saying.

It is so-o nice to finally be off from work. It's going to be an easy and fun day. Surf twice, swim at the pool, then dinner/movie.

Good Morning

Couldn't post yesterday after my session because I was really pressed for time. It wasn't as good as my friend said it was when he called with his report. He's an experienced surfer and he knows what he's talking about, so it probably did look good when he was checking it, or at least from his vantage point. It wasn't bigger than the previous day; it was cleaner at first, but the wind eventually got on it and the form worsened slightly. Still, there were some fun ones. Did a double session: once alone and then again with my son, and will do the same today. Think it's declining and today will be smaller.

Good?

Gonna be heading out soon. Just got a call from my friend. He did a quick check of the DH/Waikiki area and said it looks good--"super fun," "firing"--better than yesterday. Bigger (seems like reinforcement or fresh pulse) and cleaner. It's hot out, and the water is going to feel goooood.

Let's See

Okay, first off I noticed that the post I pointed to yesterday by Bagus was actually for his session from the day before, Aug. 9, not Aug. 10. This morning, the reports are indicating it's about the same as yesterday. If that's the case, then it's about 1-2 with 3s. I'll be hitting it in a few hours, coming home to get my son, and then heading back with him for another session. Busy. And then it'll be off to work. Wouldn't it be nice to be independently wealthy?

Posted at 8:22 AM

August 10, 2004 (Tuesday)

After

Bigger than yesterday, for sure. There were some overheaders. But the high tide was ruining it. As the tide lowers and the waves begin to feel the reef more, the form will improve. But I wonder if that will have a dwindling effect on the frequency of the sets (because the swell/pulse is weak)? Someone told me it's supposed to be bigger tomorrow.

Anything?

Bagus hit it early and says there's ". . . just a hint of that S swell . . . with inconsistent sets." The "others" are saying it's slightly bigger than yesterday. So, it seems the consensus is there's a barely-perceptible improvement.

Apologies

Sorry, I totally forgot to post after I got home. I had some chores to do, and I had a project I was working on for Nelson's site and I got so wrapped up in what I was doing.

First, the surf. It was just like yesterday: small and weak. No sign of the new swell. But it's not flat, so . . . I don't know, background stuff? Just the fringes because the main part has missed? Perhaps that's all we're getting?

Second, the thing I was working on for Nelson is a page (that will eventually go up on sadoy.com) that will show video clips of the team riders. For now, it's all Joey. Check it out: team video. I have a bunch of photos, too, that I have to edit, and I'll make those available as soon as I can.

Drudgery

Doing some work around the apartment this morning. We're putting up tarps on the roof of the building as a temporary fix for the leaking-ceiling problem. We wanted to do it ASAP because it was supposed to rain again this weekend. (I know today is not ASAP, but we tried.) Also, we had to pull one of my air conditioner units for a minor issue that I won'tt go into because it's mundane. So, Sunday morning is my usual time to completely relax at the end of what is my normal work week (Wednesday, Thursday, Friday, and Saturday nights), but instead I'm having to do this menial stuff that is a bit irritating.

Am feeling good about yesterday's results. Hoping that there are some waves at my usual spot this afternoon. It's hot and muggy outside, and I can't wait to get into the water.

Update, Part 2

Placed last, 6th, in the Open repo heat and was eliminated. Only caught one wave. For the Senior, I finished 2nd. One thing about that: there were only three of us in my first-round heat, so all of us already were advanced to the finals, and the heat was just a formality.

Posted at 3:50 PM

Update

Home between heats. Forgot my watch so decided to grab it and drop off my leash because you don't need it on a day like today. It's small, about waist- to maybe chest-high for the very biggest waves. It's pretty much flat, and every five minutes, or so, a set will come in. The conditions are excellent, though.

I placed 2nd in my first-round Open division heat and have advanced to the Repo, which is going out at approximately 11:00. The waves are so small that anything could've happened, and I don't consider it much of an accomplishment to have made it. I'm also entered in the Senior, with the first heat scheduled for 12:45.

First Event

So this morning is the first contest of the new season. It's at Queen's, and I think it's gonna be small. I remember the previous season's first event that was at Courts. It was ridiculously tiny, pretty much flat, and no one was surfing at any of the other Beach Park breaks. At least Queen's is close to home, about a few minutes. I'm going to ride my bike.

Day After

The reports this morning are saying it's small. I'm really happy the sun is out.

My apartment survived the rain and we had no major damage, just wet carpet and walls. Parts of the ceiling will need to be repaired and re-painted, but that's how it's been for a while as a result of previous storms, and it's definitely a project for another time in the far future (I'm filing it under Low Priority).

In my last post yesterday, I wanted to write more but I was in such a rush to get to work that I didn't have the time. I had a late start and came home just before I usually leave for work. So it was a mad dash to get ready, make a detour to fill gas, and then join the rush-hour traffic on the freeway. Thankfully, traffic was unusually light and fast moving.

Get

There are waves. Inconsistent, disorganized. Classic, locally-generated storm surf situation. Crowded (packed--everyone was out).

Posted at 4:15 PM

Concerned

Heading out now. But I'm worried about leaving the apartment given the current situation. While I'm gone, will parts of the ceiling break open and allow water to shower down all over my electronic equipment, furniture, personal papers and photos, etc.? Will I come home to find the place drenched? I sure as heck hope not.

Posted at 10:12 AM

Pouring Inside And Out

It rained quite heavily all night and it's still coming down. I got up at 4:00 this morning to use the bathroom only to find the ceiling leaking in several different places. I can't tell you enough what a bummer it is to have to constantly tend to and monitor the situation. Just the previous week, a contractor completed the time-consuming job of working on the entire exterior of the building to seal it against leakage. Apparently, it wasn't enough. Now as I look around my place, I see buckets and containers and towels and rags everywhere; water is dripping and streaming; and I'm a captive to it all.

Somebody, Somewhere

I wonder if certain Town spots that are properly oriented are catching this east stuff? Based on what I saw earlier, would have to say there were some pretty good sets coming through initially. I wouldn't be surprised if a few places were seeing 4-footers.

Posted at 4:09 PM

After

First 15-20 minutes: consistent 1-2 with occasional 3s. Pronounced east angle. Rippable. Bliss. Then total crap. Someone who had been out since 8:00 told me that it was all a freak surge, and that before I had gotten out it had been just as it had become, which is small and sloppy.

Suggestion: don't seriously state as fact events that haven't yet happened, especially those pertaining to processes in nature. Unless, of course, you want to be seen as foolish or naïve. What I'm referring to are postings made on certain surf-report/forecast sites in previous days proclaiming that the waves on the South Shore would be going off this weekend. I mean, you can joke or make predictions, sure, because that's something entirely different. But don't say it's going to occur as if you know it will. Only an idiot would do that.
