Any south spots that pull in a west will probably have something. Be forewarned: The kooks are out in force today.

Moderate-strong SW winds. Blown-out crap. Quite small for so much wind.

Beach Violence In Australia
Turf war between "Lebs" and surfers leads to rioting ("'While we romanticize surf culture, there is a downside, which is hard drinking, drug taking and violence...'"). Characterized as Arab vs. Aussie.

About the same but smaller. Right now, calm-light SW winds.
Oh, and apparently this ASP Webcast thing has been around since the early 1900s. As always, I'm late to the party. No surprise.

Pipe Webcast II
It's very impressive how they've implemented this. They've got it down.
The audio/video feed and the e-mailing capability plus the scoring. When someone is scored, it updates in seconds after the ride is completed. Cool stuff.
Update: I was mistaken. I guess the scores are being pulled not pushed, so they appear only when the page is auto-updated.

I'm watching the contest on the Web right now. It's pretty cool. Try it: http://www.triplecrownofsurfing.com/pipeline/live.php.

Don't Ask
Did awfully. Open: first round, 5th, eliminated; Senior: first round, 6th, eliminated. I wasn't surfing well.
And my board was bogging big time. That frickin' piece of sh**. The waves were small and weak, and I couldn't stay on. I would do one or two turns, and then the board would lose speed and sink, and the wave would simply pass me by.
I hate my board. I need my new one. Please, WT, get it done so I don't have to ride this useless log any longer--I feel it's really hurting my surfing.

Smaller but more do-able. Caught some so-so ones.
Then my friend and I shot to Country for the Pipe contest trials. No one was surfing at Lani's, Chun's, or the other intervening spots, though there were some guys out at Waimea. Pipe was about 6-8 with 10s and 12s. The local boys dominated, and three of them advanced to the main event.
I'm on a pseudo-vacation starting from today until the 21st. So today was wide open for me. That was awesome. We could surf then drive out to the North Shore. What a great day.
Tomorrow, the next event scheduled for Makaha is on at Rest Camp. There should be waves, but I don't know how good or how big.
My leg is feeling much better. Still not normal but quite good and not much pain when surfing.

Wouldn't You Know It
Now I hear my regular spot was "going off" today. Is that true? Town spots were 2-3 with clean north winds and excellent form AND un-crowded?

Surfed Makaha with my friend from New York. It was small (about waist- to head-high) and not too crowded. We figured North Shore would be too big for my friend, and that's why we opted for Wesside.

News Flash
WTF!! You don't have to be an economist, MBA, or surfboard manufacturer to know the immediate impact this will have on surfers. (Long term is another question.) Think about it. If you're like me and order custom boards, then you can see that things look gloomy. Getting a board at all, even if you're willing to pay huge money, is doubtful unless you're a pro. (What about epoxy?)
I'm extremely lucky to have placed my earlier order for two boards. They should be done already. At least, for sure, they've been shaped, so the blanks can't be used for someone else's order. Not that my shaper is unscrupulous in that way, but if you need to chose between filling an order for Sunny or me, what would you do?

Death At Pipe
Wow, I didn't know about this until my friend told me this morning. Sad. Scary. One of the articles says Nelson's son saw everything and was right in the thick of it. Joyeux was doing what he loved.
