December 31, 2007 (Monday)

Party?

Happy New Year everyone.

Q: Who sings the song "Are You Having Any Fun" on the Safeway holiday commercial?

Hey fellow with a million smackers
And nervous indigestion
Rich fellow, eats milk and crackers
I'll ask you one question
You silly so and so
With all your dough...

Are you havin' any fun?
What y'gettin' out o' livin'?
What good is what you've got
If you're not havin' any fun?

Are you havin' any laughs?
Are you gettin' any lovin'?
If other people do,
So can you, have a little fun

After the honey's in the cone
Little bees go out and play
Even the old grey mare down home
Has got to have hay...HEY!

You better have some fun
You ain't gonna live forever
Before you're old and gray, feel okay
Have your little fun, son!
Have your little fun!

Why do you work and slave and save?
Life is full of ifs and buts
You know the squirrels save and save
And what have they got...NUTS!

Better have a little fun
You ain't gonna live forever
Before you're old and grey, still okay
Have your little fun, son!
Have your little fun!
Are you havin' any fun?

Bigger. Wind-swell wrap from the east? Whatever the source, there were some over-headers. Kinda crowded. Onshore then switched to trades.

Post-session

As we watched from the cars, the end-corner bowl looked fun, and some of the regulars seemed to be getting good rides--we were surprised. But once we got out, we found it to be pretty junk. It was crowded, sloppy and weak.

Post-session

Quite bad this morning. Seems like more wave action and size. But very windy. Blustery winter day.

Awful to start then better near the end. Kook City. Longies: You guys suck.

Post-session

Actually not bad and much more wave action (which was due most likely to the stronger trades).

Post-session

Went out to the A-framer to be alone. It was undoable.

Post-session

Would have to say the Right-hander was going off. Biggest (head to slightly-over on the sets) and best stuff for me since RI (almost three weeks ago). At first, just a handful of people and then several more joined but only about three of us were snagging the good ones. Very fun.

Still miserable but slightly better with more wave action.

Post-session

Smaller. One of the worst of all the worse days. Wind did drop a bit.

I'm glad we only have to worry about sharks. I guess this is like a land shark (via Boing Boing). (Cf.: Sequence.)

Post-session

Slightly smaller. Still blowing hard. Quite awful.

Post-session

At least the same size. Better direction/form. Windy. Not crowded. Fun.

I would've been scared out of my mind: "Shark gets tangled in Hawaii surfer's gear."

New swell getting bigger. Windy. Fun.

Post-session

A-framer again because crowded everywhere. Boring.

Other places bigger--looks like showing signs of something new. Heard from one of the regulars that Christmas Island pinging with fresh southern energy.

Post-session

A-framer. Small and doable. Pretty good conditions but form still showing effects of onshore winds.

Post-session

Probably the best in more than a week. Some doable head-high. Crowded.

December 7, 2007 (Friday)

Post-session

Windier and stormier but some do-able ones on the outside (believe it or not).

December 6, 2007 (Thursday)

Post-session

More manageable (with better conditions/form) and slightly smaller but still awful. Crowded.

Post-session

Bigger (especially on the outside) but out of control.

December 4, 2007 (Tuesday)

Post-session

Undoable. Cauldron of whitewater. Strong current. Man-of-war. Paddled around for half an hour.

Post-session

Surfed RI for the first time. We paddled over. That wasn't fun.

When I got out there I was surprised. From shore, it had looked small and maybe a few guys out; but we found sizeable waves with about 10-15 people.

I would call it 2-4 with 6s and 8-foot bombs. Definitely the biggest stuff I've surfed since summer or maybe the entire year. I had difficulty stroking into the bigger ones with my 6' 0". I stayed on the inside alone. I got some good ones.

My friend went to the main peak. There was a small group of guys who had it wired and completely dominated the bowl. They were catching EVERYTHING. I waited patiently farther in and snagged whatever got by them. Some of my best rides were ones on which someone had fallen or failed the takeoff.

On the way in, one of my friends came out on a jet ski and towed us all the way. That was nice because I was burnt.

Post-session

Slightly bigger. Same conditions/form.

One interesting thing: nice, big shark. It had been several feet away from me lurking just below the surface. A friend of mine also said he had seen it right next to him. But both of us didn't realize what it was because the water was cloudy. We thought it was a branch or frond because it was brown.

Then another friend saw it clearly through a wave. He said it was pointed straight at him angled down and that the snout looked to be about a foot and a half across. Based on that, he estimated the body length to be about 7-8 feet.

My friend was spooked. He had been sitting on the outside, and as soon as he saw it he paddled in toward us, excitedly told us what he had seen, and then immediately went to the very inside and sat there. Initially I thought it was all very amusing. Then I understood how he felt. Anyway, I was going in at that time so I caught one and that was it.

In retrospect, both my other friend and I concluded that what we had seen earlier and mistook for debris had actually been the shark. We acknowledged that neither of us had seen any branches or wood in the water during the entire session.
